have firsthand encounters with the world. The world the way it is, not the way you imagine it. This will change you. Nothing will ever again be black-and-white.

strange things thus far

So I knew things would be different here but I could have never imagined some of the things I've seen...
1. Public restrooms rarely have toilet paper and you must never flush your tp, toss in garbage only! Don't worry. I always carry packs of kleenex with me.
2. The stoplights in the city have a countdown as to when the light will turn green allowing pedestrians to cross, where as in the states there is a countdown until the light turns red.
3. Sharp knives are used to curl eyelashes (imagine a scissors curling ribbon...yup. OUCH!)
4. Sparkling water (agua con gas) has nearly replaced tap water here. Sparkling water tastes like soda water when the syrup runs out in the cook machine. blah!
5. they remove the peal from all vegetables before cooking (tomatoes, potatoes, carrots, etc). Which I am pretty sure all the vitamins are found in the peal.
6. Black pepper is nearly impossible to find and never an option in restaurants
7. The buses have no established shedule nor routes. Talk about taking a risk
8. bathroom doors are always left shut rather occupied or not (i've heard that the toilets here are not equipped with drain traps or something causing the ick smell to hang around for awhile) I never know if someone is in the bathroom or not, and honestly not sure what I'd respond in spanish if someone came knockin on the door.
9. I've observed many chileans ONLY EATING the crust of the bread and discarding the "good part" That explains why the men on the street are such good whistles!!
10. Fanny packs! need I say more.
11. dogs roaming the streets, some with missing legs and patches of hair missing yet still chasing after cars. (I cringe watching a pack of dogs try to cross the highway..it'd break my heart to watch one get run over!!)
12. Somehow individuals have discovered how to program the horns of their cars into making a whistling sound and many other odd sounds at that
13. 90% of the population uses prepaid phones (due to the fact it will most likely get stolen) and all incoming calls are free, so if someone wants to get ahold of you they will call you and hang up so you have to spend your minutes on calling them back. ha. sneeky!
14. Black boogers. The pollution is so bad in Santiago that your nose filters the air causing black boogers.
15. free refills do not exist. when ordering a beverage it comes in a glass bottle (just like ting)

....more to come as I venture my remaining 9 months in the Chilean Vida!
