The Lord's word came to life last night. I never thought I would literally see a parable (which is meant as a metaphor) in the Bible, reinact itself in my life, word for word. Last night, after partying pretty hard with my roomie Menfis, we were taking a Micro (a public bus) back from Valpo. We jumped off in time, blocks from our apartment. We began making our way up the hill, slurring words, heads pounding, and Menfis dry heaving. (ha..you only live once, right?) And I see some chico attempting to descend...waddling down the hill. It was apparent he was in worst condition than us, I lean over to Menfis, "Look at this guy! Atleast we are not that drunk?" Bow legged he eaks his way down the hill and Menfis shouts out, "Como estai? (this is a term of close friendship genuinely asking how someone is..apparently she was feeling friendly) He responds, "Terrible" atlast our journey up hill meets his path..we grow closer and notice his hands are covered in blood, his face and clothes blood stained. Menfis points at his feet..without shoes. A young boy in his 20s walking in our neighborhood completely torn to shreds. "They jumped me and took everything." Compassion fell on Menfis and I aswe immediately sobbered up. He is from out of town and had been abandonded by friends who wanted to go to a strip club. As he was walking down hill to reach a mode of public transportation..7 flaites (gangsters) jumped him, he had been carrying a lot of money considering he was "visiting the city" so he attempted to defend himself with a bottle which shattered in his hands. The flaites had a pipe which they hit him on the back of the head and stripped him of his shoes, everything in his backpockets, and his headphones. Arm and arm we head for him with Felipe. and we make him a bed. A glass of water and I suck up the sacrifice of giving him the last of my United States Tylenol Extra Strength (pills like that dont exist here). He cries as he holds out his hands which we wash and put neosporin and bandage. He fells fast asleep as we scroll through his phone to call family. No answer. This morning he awakes with such gratitude and embrassment. He gets a hold of his parents and continuous to thank us. I remind menfis of the parable in the bible: The Parable of the Good Samaritan.
Luke 10:25-37...And expert of the law stood up to test jesus, "What must I do to inherit eternal life?" Jesus replies, "What is written in the law? How do you read it?" the man replies "Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength, and with all your mind and Love you neighbor as yourself" The expert in law continues "And who is my neighbor?" Jesus began to tell a story, "A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho when he fell into the hands of robbers. They stripped him of his clothes, beat him and went away, living him half dead. A priest happened to be going down the same road and when he saw the man he passed by on the other side. So too a Levite when he came to teh place and saw him passed by on the other side. But a Samaritan as he traveled came where the man was; and when he saw him, he took pity on him. he went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring oil and wine. The he put the man on his own downkey took him to an inn and took care of him." Jesus asks the law expert "Which of these three do you think was a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of the robbers?" The expert in the law replied, "The one who had mercy on him." Jesus told him, "go and do likewise and you shall inherit eternal life."
WHOA. how crazy right?
